Overview
Quito's historic centre, among the first places to be inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the best-preserved colonial cities in the Americas. Baroque churches, gilded altars, quiet cloisters and lively plazas line its cobbled streets, while the Panecillo viewpoint opens onto the city and the surrounding volcanoes.
Just north of the city, the Middle of the World monument marks the equator that gives the country its name. Beyond Quito, the Andes rise in high valleys and snow-capped peaks, and some 1,000 kilometres offshore lie the Galápagos Islands, celebrated for wildlife found nowhere else on earth. Together they make Ecuador a destination of rare contrast, ideal for travellers who want culture, scenery and nature in a single itinerary.
